"I turn back and toddle towards the window. My knee bangs against my desk. I squeal. Smoke creeps into my room. Red and purple clouds fill the sky. Flames light the dark city. Two missiles stab the clouds..."

This book is not about bare feet or taking a stroll on the beach. It's about being deprived of my friends, stripped of my Baghdad, and crippled by culture shock.

"As she bends to grab her pen, her pink panties peek from under her skirt. A boy whistles at her. She smiles. I stare. Gross. She's a kalelat-haya. I wish I could tell her that. I don't know how to say it in English."
