It Gets Better is a collection of creative nonfiction short stories that explore the most gut-wrenching parts of a girl’s life.
Brianna Piedra, a fifteen-year-old girl from Cambridge witnesses the traumatizing fights and the divorce of her parents. She is forced to move in with her grandparents and she feels abandoned by her mother and father. She lives by her mother’s words—“don’t let people see you cry, it shows weakness”—and spends her entire youth hiding behind anger to avoid confronting her sadness.
During her high school years and up to university, Brianna must being to deal with her mistakes, loss, sadness and anger in order to discover that crying does not always equal weakness—it means you’re letting your body and mind heal, and that things really do get better.
