“Religion over culture,” Mama always told me. And it’s true. I derive my identity from being a Muslim. Before I am Indonesian, I am Muslim. Before I am a woman, I am Muslim. Islam is more core identity and belief.
By making the decision to wear the hijab at the age of nine, I realize that in America, before people see the colour of my skin, they see the scarf on my head.
