Featuring "Diamond Heights" by Rachel James |
tonight's writer and stories Rachel James is a documentarian, specializing in oral history and multimedia representation. Her research explores the problematics of translation and the power of folk history in the context of political activism, communication and intergenerational exchange. James is a MA candidate in Adult Education and Community Development,University of Toronto. In “Diamond Heights,” Rachel pauses for a moment and reflects on her own life as her 101-year-old grandmother, coping with the limitations— both physical and mental—of her age, profoundly articulates her frustration; and again in her second piece, “The First Stop,” as she interviews Samantha, a twenty-year-old woman living in a homeless shelter. Samantha earns our admiration as shares her experiences and offers advice for other young women who face the same situation. |
