Hosted by Virginia Ashberry featuring Chinedu Ukabam reading her stories |
tonight's Show Tonight, Life Rattle No. 1191, continues our exploration of Black History Month with two stories from Life Rattle writer Chinedu Ukabam. Chinedu Ukabam was born in 1979 in Bristol, England, the second oldest of four. His mother a physiologist, his father an MD–had moved from their native Nigeria to study in England. The family returned to Nigeria when Chinedu was three. They lived in Enugu in eastern Nigeria until 1989 when the family moved to the United States. The story he will read tonight takes place during this time. After a few more moves, the family ended in Hamilton Ontario. Ukabam finished high school in Hamilton then studied at the University of Toronto at Mississauga. Tonight's first story, “Black Boy”, is a simply stated example of the difficulties and joys of being in the minority…being “different.” Our second story, “Unresolved,” reminds us that a lot of young people’s habits and relationships with family are the same, regardless of ethnicity.
