tonight's Show

On tonight’s program, Life Rattle Number 1281, we feature stories by two new Life Rattle writers, Anna Li and Gabriel Miceli.

Both writers featured on tonight’s program will have their stories included in this year’s Totally Unknown Writers Festival collection, along with the work of twenty-three other talented writers—a very good reason to come down to the Rivoli, in Toronto, on Wednesday, November 21st.

Our first writer, Anna Li, was born in 1992 and raised in the unassuming suburbs of Mississauga, Ontario. Her parents immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong. Between 2011 and 2013, Anna spent twelve weeks in Kolkata, India, where she fell in love with the aggressive hospitality renowned of West Bengali culture, and the relentless nature the city has to offer. Apart from art-making and reading, Anna Li has a penchant for writing letters. She is also learning how not to over-glorify busyness, to hold things loosely, and how to be okay with not being okay.

The power in Anna’s story, "Little Bird," comes from her elegant prose, where each word and detail imparts meaning. The unflinching calm of the narrator, confined to the floor of the bathroom as her mother rages through the house, is as chilling as the violence outside of the door.

Tonight’s second writer, Gabriel Miceli, was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1993, the eldest of two children to his father, an architect from Argentina, and his mother, a flight attendant from Brazil. His family moved to Laval, Quebec, when Gabriel was two years old, then to Toronto when he was four. Once he turned seven, and his sister was born, his family moved to the suburbs of Mississauga, where Gabriel is now a university student studying history and political science. Gabriel Miceli enjoys reading the classics, playing guitar, writing and travelling.

In "Snowy Night in the City," Gabriel tackles major themes with a deft hand in his depiction of a young man and woman who stand between the dazzling activity of the city and the cold isolation of Lake Ontario, engaged in deep conversation beneath a curtain of falling snow.

Please note: tonight’s first story includes an intense situation that some listeners may find disturbing. Parental discretion is advised.
