tonight's Show Life Rattle No. 1358 features six classic stories from Life Rattle writer Ingrid Sevels. Ingrid Sevels was born the middle of three children in Sweden, just after her parents escaped from their native Latvia—then under Soviet occupation—in an eighteen foot fishing boat. Her parents came to Canada in 1950 and worked on a farm outside Kingston, Ontario for two years before moving to Toronto. Sevels grew up in the Riverdale neighbourhood, then attended the University of Toronto in dentistry. She graduated and married in 1971. The couple had their first child in 1973, then moved to west to Oakville. Her third child was born in 1977. Ingrid Sevels lives and works in Oakville Ontario. We’re going to hear six stories by Ingrid Sevels about a trip she made with her daughter to Latvia in 2001. Sevels’ direct prose style, her wry observations and her sharp eye and ear for detail remove any traces of false sentiment in this trip back to the motherland. These stories together form a larger narrative. Please Note: Tonight's stories contain language and situations that some listeners may find offensive. Listener discretion is advised. |
